Acrylic painting of a zebra's face cropped so close that the stripes run off all four edges. Black stripes on white, with a single amber-brown eye and dark lashes left of centre. Rust-red streaks are laid across the white in several places, and a dark muzzle with rust-coloured hairs fills the lower right corner.

This is cropped close enough that the animal is nearly gone. No ears, no outline, no ground — the stripes run off all four edges and the only thing telling you what you are looking at is the eye. The stripes are flat black on flat white with no grey between them, except where the muzzle turns away at the bottom.

The rust is the part that is not a zebra. It is in the eye, in a few marks laid across the white, and in the hairs along the muzzle. Put a thumb over the eye and this becomes a pattern. Take it away and it looks back at you.
