Always give your best
We have all, at one time or the other, been faced with tasks we don’t particularly enjoy, but are forced to do due to circumstances. But that should not deter us from giving our best – every time.
When I was working for Satyam Computer Services Limited, I started off as a Helpdesk Associate. A Helpdesk Associate is not unlike a receptionist, only a lot less glamorous. Satyam believed that people could concentrate on their work better if their monthly chores were taken care of. All they had to do was hand the bills to me, and I would take care of it.
The scope of work expanded to booking tickets, making travel arrangements, making hotel reservations, and all the trivial, yet somehow important, work that people did not prefer doing themselves. The whole exercise had a process. If an employee had to go and meet a client and would require company transport, he would have to place a request to his immediate superior who would reply with an approval. The approval would then be sent to me and I would do the needful.
There were times when an employee had an urgent meeting with a client (prospective) and there was not enough time to wait for an internal approval. I would then go ahead and make the necessary arrangements and take care of the approval later. For me, it was not just a booking, it was an opportunity for my alma mater to grow, and I was not going to stand in the way of that.
This could not escape the notice of several Vice Presidents. In fact, one of them played a pivotal role in my becoming a web developer.
I did not do anything out of the ordinary. I just thought of the company before thinking of saving my own skin. I did my best – and people noticed.
People will always notice when you do your best, for you will transcend set boundaries and go the extra mile!
