Younity turns your computer into a private streaming service so you can access everything, anytime.
Over time, most of us collect a lot of media. We build large music collections, create huge photo libraries and have incredible amounts of video. All of this ultimately ends up on the home computer, if not spread across multiple computers. Of course, we store all this content because we want to look, listen and watch it. So what do you do when you’re away from your computer and want to access something? For years, companies have pushed cloud storage as a place to put all this content, but people don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars per year nor manage that process. Younity is a simple, free service to unify and access all your content.
Younity works differently than most other services – it doesn’t upload your content, “sync” content across devices (taking up storage on each), or make you manage it constantly. Instead, you install their software on each computer you have, your smartphone and tablet, and it enables them all to access files from one another. It unifies all your content, so you can easily search, browse and stream it to your mobile device or share it with your friends.
Although this requires devices to be connected to the Internet, the service works incredibly well. It’s fast, easy to setup, streaming starts in seconds, and it organizes your content for easy discovery. It can find our iTunes playlists, GoPro video and Apple Photos (or Lightroom, if you use that) photo albums and lets you stream or share them. Files can be downloaded for offline access.
Because they don’t upload your files to their servers, it’s secure and totally private, they call it a “personal cloud.” Sharing works the same way – all shares are peer-to-peer.
